UMCTO's annual Kilimanjaro expedition is more than a climb — it is a masterclass in leadership, navigation, altitude management, and wilderness first aid. This year, 24 students from the Tour Guiding program summited via the Machame Route.
Weeks before departure, students completed intensive training in altitude physiology, group management, and emergency evacuation procedures. Each student was required to pass a wilderness first aid certification.
Over seven days, students navigated through five distinct climate zones — from montane forest to arctic summit. They practiced real-time weather assessment, porter coordination, and client health monitoring at every camp.
Starting at midnight from Barafu Camp, the cohort reached Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Every student who summited did so while simultaneously managing a simulated guest scenario — the ultimate test of multitasking under extreme conditions.
The expedition reinforces UMCTO's core belief: you cannot teach the mountain from a classroom. Our graduates don't just know Kilimanjaro — they have earned it.
