Our Story

In honor of a visionary.

UMCTO was born from a single conviction: that Tanzania's extraordinary natural heritage deserves equally extraordinary guardians. This is the story of the man who turned that conviction into a college.

“The wilderness doesn't need more tourists. It needs more people who understand it deeply enough to protect it while sharing it with the world.”

— Mr. Edgardo Kabulwa Welelo, Founder

The Naturalist Who Became an Educator

Mr. Edgardo Kabulwa Welelo spent over two decades as a professional naturalist guide, leading expeditions through the Serengeti's endless plains, up the slopes of Kilimanjaro, and deep into the Udzungwa Mountains — the biodiversity hotspot that would later inspire the college's name.

Through thousands of hours in the field, he witnessed a widening gap between what the industry demanded and what young Tanzanians were being trained to deliver.

From Field to Classroom

In 2008, Welelo founded UMCTO in Moshi, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The college's philosophy was radical in its simplicity — teach tourism the way the wilderness teaches you: through direct, immersive experience.

Students wouldn't just read about safari guiding; they would track wildlife across the Serengeti. They wouldn't merely study hotel management theory; they would serve guests at real lodges.

A Legacy in Numbers

What began as a single classroom has grown into a fully accredited institution with NACTE registration (REG/BTP/044P) and Cambridge International College accreditation (ASC1183). Over 3,470 graduates have passed through UMCTO's doors.

“Every student who walks through these doors carries forward a responsibility — not just to their careers, but to the land that makes those careers possible.”

— Mr. Edgardo Kabulwa Welelo

The Udzungwa Connection

The college takes its name from the Udzungwa Mountains, one of Tanzania's most biodiverse ecosystems. It was in these ancient forests that Welelo first understood the profound link between education and conservation.
